PIN stands for of Postal Index Number system. India is one of the largest economies and has densely populated areas. It has around 36 states including union territories (UT). There are a lot of places in India which have similar names. Even in one district or state, you will find multiple places with similar name. It was nearly impossible to deliver mails to the right location. That is why Pin Code system was first introduced on 15 August, 1972.

What does 6 digit PIN Code Means?

The first digit of PIN code represents region and states covered in that region. The first 2 digits of PIN code represents actual states covered. The first 3 digits represents district in that state and last 3 digits represents nearby post office. For example: In this pincode 388365, first digit 3 represents Westrern region, 38 represnts Gujarat, 388 represents Anand district and last 3 digits 365 represents nearby post office Khanpur.
